Participating in Music Outreach for Senior Homes - by Suzie Solomon
When you are performing for seniors homes there are all levels of care - retirement homes, assisted living and nursing - and sometimes some in between. It does not seem to make a difference to the seniors - they all enjoy music and they all enjoy seeing new folks come to visit them. According to nursing home professionals, 85% of nursing home residents get no visitors.
So why not share your talents and love of music with these forgotten ones? I guarantee it will lift their spirits and yours as well.
You do not have to be a virtuoso. Don't wait until you get 'good enough'. If you can play along with a group, you are ready. You may not want to sing or take breaks and that is fine because there are usually other musicians in the group who will do that.
The residents will be happy with whatever music is provided, but they especially enjoy old songs they know and can sing along with - Red Wing, My Blue Heaven, You Are My Sunshine, etc. These can be adapted to bluegrass.
Bluegrass music in general is fun, upbeat music and they love it.
So - join a group that goes to senior homes - or start a group! More coming on how to start your own group to play at senior homes.
