Executive Message – Bluegrass is more fun in community
Welcome to another issue of Pow’r Pickin’. Since there are a lot of ways you can access our publication, online, in stores, through the mail or borrowed from a friend, it’s quite possible that you are not a member of the Colorado Bluegrass Music Society. I often ask for feedback and suggestions from members about what they’d like to see us cover in these pages, whether printed on paper or online. I’m perhaps even more interested in what you, as a reader, but not member, are thinking you’d like to see. What could we offer that would make joining this organization more enticing? In a previous issue I wrote about the value in buying merchandise from the bands you see in concert and so here I’ll suggest you find organizations supporting bluegrass music to join. I would, of course, love to have you as a member of CBMS, but we’re not the only one. Check out the International Bluegrass Music Association, or look up the various Web sites like Bluegrass Today that feature bluegrass news. Read, subscribe, comment and connect. Bluegrass has always been a community-based musical genre and in that long-ago, pre-digital age you pretty much had to connect in person so it was a little easier to know who was following our supporting your work. These days we can consume mountains of data, sample music, look at pictures and more, with the people creating that work barely knowing we exist as anything more than a tally mark on an analytics spread sheet. Take some time to find the organizations that are producing material you enjoy and let them know you’re there, if you’re not finding much then make suggestions. I, for one, would love to hear more in the way of feedback and I’ll make a prediction; you’ll enjoy the music more if you’re interacting on a level beyond just listening.
