September finds us in a lull-that terrible time between summer's end and the tapering off of live, outdoor festivals, and the ramping up of the very active, indoor live music season. Let's end this season well: attend the Four Corners Folk Festival, September 4, 5 and 6. If you're in the mood to travel, the famous "Winfield" – known as Walnut Valley Festival happens September 16-19 in Kansas. And at the end of the month, the grandaddy of all festivals: IBMA's World of Bluegrass takes place in Raleigh, NC September 29 - October 2. Here is the list of the showcase bands that will be appearing. Go Colorado bands!!
If you are into live music, it's good to know about your local acoustic society and its show and jam schedule. Here are the links to Black Rose Acoustic Society, Canon Rose Acoustic Society, Mountain Acousitc Music Association, Buffalo Grass Acoustic Society, Rocky Mountain Highway, Durango Acoustic Music, Denver Acoustic Music Society,...I am sure there are others. If you are a member of one not mentioned, please email me here. Many of these groups have their own jams, as well as their own concert series. CBMS tries to locate jams across the state. Check here for those. And here's a schedule of a few things we have found to do during September. There's always our own talented bands on call whose show schedules show up here.
There have been a few questions about some "housekeeping" items within CBMS: If you are looking for venues to approach about booking your band, we have a list here for your reference. Some are local, some are out of town. If you're planning on traveling, it's nice to be able to book gigs along the way. And, in case any of you are wondering: when does my CBMS membership expire? The date is on the mailing label that is attached to the monthly Pow'r Pickin' newsletter. Also, as a member of CBMS, you receive discounts. Here is the list of businesses that provide a member discount to CBMS members. And on another note: CBMS is currently looking for someone to fill the position of "Volunteer Coordinator"....we are paying $100 per month for this position to be filled. It is critical that the volunteers who donate time to CBMS are handled well. We value our volunteers and do not want to waste anyone's volunteer time. We want to create a volunteer schedule and keep things running smoothly. Are you organized? Do you have the time to invest? We would love to talk wtih you. Please email us here.
The Colorado Bluegrass Music Society is proud to present its second concert in the Lafayette Bluegrass Series. Happening Friday, October 2, we will have SilverPlume, and opening for this great bluegrass band is "The Savage Hearts." SilverPlume has been screaming up the local talent charts and offers a fantastic show. They are each excellent players and together they are downright awesome. The Savage Hearts is a new project featuring Dave Richey, Janeen Bogue, Kit Simon, Kevin Slick, Kathy Drazsnzak, and our own CBMS president, Annie Savage. Billed as "bluegrass with a curtsy toward honky-tonk and western swing" this band ought to offer one heck of a kick off to this fabulous new series. Learn more about this upcoming concert, and buy tickets here.
Enjoy the last bits of summer. Squeeze as much in to the days as you can and we'll be seeing you!
